Supermoon Lunar Eclipse tonight

lunar-eclipseFar from being another character in the DC comic book universe, supermoon is the sort of lunar eclipse that most of us will have a chance to check out tonight.

According to NASA:

A supermoon is a full or new moon that falls closest to the fall equinox, and is at its closest approach to the Earth. This results in the moon appearing up to 14% larger in diameter. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly behind the Earth into its shadow. This can give the moon a red tint.

When both events occur simultaneously, you have a supermoon lunar eclipse. Skywatchers in the Americas, Europe and Africa will be able to witness the eclipse tonight beginning at 10:11pm. The full event should last for about 70 minutes.

There were only 5 supermoon lunar eclipses in the 1900s with the last in 1982. After this Sunday night, we won’t have another until the year 2033. So if you get a chance, check it out. It’s guaranteed to be the best show on Earth.  (jj)
