Weekend Spin: A look at the week gone by

Weekend Spin: A look at the week gone by

Its time for a quick look at some of the more notable events of the past week with your Weekend Spin.

gergstoryJoseph Gergley probably considers this a pretty good week. He’s the 26 year-old political newcomer that finished first in the recent Gahanna mayoral primary and will battle a longtime city councilman in November’s general election. After his election night victory, people began looking into his social media history and, going back a couple of years, found some posts that were considered by others to be offensive. Late last week, Gergley explained the messages by saying that they had been taken out of context and…besides…he had been young when he wrote them…as opposed to the old man of 26 that he is today. His explanation did little to quiet the criticism, so on Monday, he tried again. He went back to social media, back to Facebook and again said that the messages were taken out of context, that he was young when he wrote them. But then he also offered a blanket apology. Since then, it appears that the criticism has died down, which is not to say that it won’t return. For now, this whole thing might do best to serve as a lesson to some folks that when you post something on the internet, whether its text, pics, videos or whatever,…something that you LOL about today may not be seen as funny tomorrow.

Jenis-doorThis week also brought the welcome news that Jeni’s has begun ice cream production again and plans to reopen stores in time for Memorial Day Weekend. The way that the company handled themselves, by closing up shop and issuing a voluntary product recall after a positive listeria test in Nebraska, has widely been looked at favorably. People have said that the company’s response put customer safety ahead of profits and that it was socially responsible. Jeni’s can expect to have a lot of customers lined up when they get those doors open again.

hochOhio State used this week to name an interim band director…giving the duty to associate director Christopher Hoch. OSU says that they’ll focus on filling the job for good at the end of the upcoming season. Why do I feel like there are children who aren’t even born yet who are still going to be hearing about Ohio State vs Jon Waters? Someone, please…make it stop.

And that’s your weekend spin.  (jj)
