Westland Mall owners given 30 days to bring facility up to code
Update: With the once-thriving shopping center recently declared a “nuisance,” the owners of Westland Mall have been given 30 days to bring the facility up to code or they’ll likely be taken to court. The mall hollowed-out mall was recently vandalized and today sits without heat or electricity…a fear to township officials who worry about what could happen in a fire during the cold months of winter.
Previous: Township calls Westland Mall a ‘nuisance,’ clears way for destruction 12/9/2015
When I was but a young pup growing up on the West Side of Columbus, I spent many days and nights hanging out at the Westland Mall with my friends. We spent hours at a time in the arcade or elsewhere just goofing off. I even worked in one of the stores for a time. The place has sat mostly empty for years. And now the road has been cleared to bulldoze the place.
Plaza Properties (owner of the hollowed out mall) and Franklin Township officials met on Wednesday and the former shopping center has now been deemed a nuisance. This declaration means that Plaza can tear it down and that’s exactly what they hope to do. (To be clear, Plaza owns most of the site with Sears owning the rest.)
Plaza Properties says that demolition would cost $1.5 million. No date has been set for the mall’s destruction. The group hopes to come up with a plan that would pay for that demolition.
