Your office printer is working against you

Your office printer is working against you

Yesterday, hackers and security consultants met for a security-themed conference. And at one seminar, participants learned how some hackers are breaking into a company’s computer system: through its printers. That’s right, the same machine that jams and gets toners all over your hands might be the way in for hackers looking to loot information.

Deral Heiland, who works as a security consultant and was the seminar’s instructor says, “When I go into a company, about 40 to 50 percent of the time I can use their multi-function printer to gain access to their windows active directory environment and gain access to their file servers.”

Great. Looks like I now have another reason to be suspicious of the printer. (deb)
