Back in 1985, Columbus Mayor Buck Rinehart teamed up with the International Motor Sports Association to turn downtown Columbus into a race track.
The race only lasted a few years, and ended up being cancelled in 1989 after it faced huge debt due to the expense of shutting down city streets compared with meager profits.
But fortunately for us, footage of the inaugural 1985 street race exists, and it’s available for free to watch!
It’s pretty amazing to see downtown Columbus from the cockpit of a GTP racecar–check it out!
