The world’s top anime films will be flown in from around the globe to play alongside the celebrated January return of Ghibli at GFC, Gateway Film Center’s signature anime event, back by overwhelming demand the studio announced in a press release this afternoon.

In 2015, the film center presented Ghibli at GFC, a four-month screening series of anime giant Studio Ghibli’s films. It was the first time anywhere that the entire Ghibli catalog had been presented in order of release, and visitors travelled to Columbus from as far away as Florida and Iowa to see movies they couldn’t see anywhere else. Now, the film center has announced the return of the series, which will run January 1 through February 24, culminating in the world premiere of the newest Ghibli film, The Red Turtle.

“We work very hard to bring great anime film to this part of the country, both for our neighbors that love it and to introduce it to new fans,” said Gateway Film Center President and Programmer Chris Hamel. “During Ghibli at GFC, people hugged and cried and told us they thought they’d never see their favorite anime movie of all time on the big screen, and right then, I knew we had to bring it back, for them and others that missed it.”

Making January an even bigger anime event is the arrival of three other major titles: One Piece Film: Gold (1/10), Sailor Moon R (1/19), and Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Dark Side of Dimensions (1/27). Sailor Moon and One Piece film are exclusive to Gateway Film Center.

“These are the biggest moments in anime cinema, and they’re happening in Columbus,” said Hamel. “The film center is a place that celebrates movies and the people that love them, and that makes me proud.”
