Columbus: #6 Best City for Beer in the United States

Just in case you’ve been living under a rock for the past ten years, let me fill you in — Columbus is swimming in craft beer.

Yes, our little big city is making the rounds today after “Smartasset” named us in the top ten beer paradises in the country.

While the name to the site isn’t instantly recognizable, their metrics and data collecting methods aren’t bad — using the number of microbreweries per city, number of bars per 100,000 residents, the average Yelp score of breweries and the average price of a pint — they’ve got a somewhat comprehensive list going.

Ohio, as it stands, is considered one of the three beer “paradises” along with Montana and North Carolina.

Rounding out the top 5 are: Asheville, NC — Portland, Maine — Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — Cincinnati, Ohio — Portland, Oregon.

Then comes Columbus, a newcomer to the list (last year we were #14) — We’ve got 27 breweries in the city, and the price of our beer is “cheap” and there are lots of bars to drink — with 29 bars for every 100,000 residents and the average cost of a beer is $3.

We’re only down by 2 “index” points to beat Cincinnati according to the site’s infographic. We need more microbreweries and our Yelp score needs to go up a tad. Other than that, we’re golden.
