Columbus craft distillers 451 Spirits launch line of whiskey, rum

451 Spirits might be a new name to you, but don’t underestimate Columbus’ newest craft distillers, who aim to bring depth and complexity to their line of whiskeys and rums.

“We had a pretty low profile until our products were ready to be introduced,” owner-founder David Chew told 614NOW. “The goal is to give it a much more complex flavor. A lot of drinks you taste–it’s all kind of one note. We want ours to have at least three to five flavors per sip.”

Chew said he and his team are taking an “apothecary approach” to distilling, that is to say, less futuristic mad science, more ancient, long-lost alchemy.

“We’re trying to minimize the amount of filterings that the whiskey goes through,” Chew said. “We’re trying to preserve as much of the original flavor of the whiskey as we can.”

The 451 team said they use all-natural ingredients. For example, the smoked apple in the whiskey comes from actual smoked apples, rather than a chemical additive.

A launch party for the new line of liquor is set for February 28 at Little Rock Bar featuring cocktails, music, and “educational tastings” that pit name-brand whiskey against 451 craft whiskey.

“The goal is to help people develop a little bit of a finer pallate for these drinks,” Chew said.

Expect to see 451 Spirits in select liquor stores around central Ohio in the coming weeks.
