RIP Hometown Buffet, we knew ye well

After serving up buffet-style eats for years, the last Hometown Buffet in Central Ohio has closed, and the availability of cheap, 5,000-calorie meals in Columbus has decreased sharply as a result.

The restaurant’s Morse Road location closed amid struggling sales for parent company Ovation Brands, which operates just four restaurants in the state.

Ovation Brands had 600 stores nationwide ten years ago, and now they have just 150, after declaring bankruptcy earlier this year.

Shifting consumer trends, including a broadening of the audience for local eats, could be to blame.

The last two Hometown Buffets in Ohio are in Toledo and Niles, for anyone who wishes to pay their respects.
