City Council Works With Protesters on CPD Changes
Council President Zach Klein and the People’s Justice Project (PJP) announced that they have met several times since last week’s disrupted council meeting, and have agreed that the city will consider changes to the Summer Safety Initiative, according to the Columbus Dispatch.
In a press release PJP announced that they had fought for an independent investigation of the Henry Green police shooting and an end to the Summer Safety Initiative, a program intended to reduce violent crime.
PJP states that the initiative, while well intended, targets communities of color. They made the same demand after Tyre King was shot and killed by a Columbus police officer just one month ago.
In their press release, PJP said, “if we’re loud it’s because we’re in pain. If we’re persistent, it’s because we’re committed to making Columbus safe for everyone.”
If changes to the Summer Safety Initiative do happen, it could mean a redistribution of $750,000 a year the city spends on it, according to the Dispatch.
