Columbus May Restrict Tobacco Sales to 21 and Older
[Updated] The vote is scheduled for Monday —If the vote passes, it would be in-line with neighboring communities like Upper Arlington, Bexley, Grandview Heights, and New Albany who’ve passed similar legislation.
Columbus is looking to increase the smoking age from 18 to 21 in a new proposal. The consideration would ban the sale of tobacco products to anyone under 21.
Retailers would be required to ask for an I.D. for anyone under 30.
If the age is increased and ban put in place, a new license would be required annually — costing retailers $150.
There would be no legal repercussions of those in-between the smoking age if the proposal is enacted. You just wouldn’t be able to buy cigarettes anymore. The Columbus City Council will vote on the proposed legislation in December.
What do you think? Is this a good move for the city?
