Kasich Signs a Pro-Puppy Mill Law

The general vibe is that puppy mills are pretty bad — now we could be wrong and misread the general take from society but we rarely hear someone exposing the virtues of Puppy Mills that isn’t making huge profits from them. According to all of the anti-puppy mill groups they often mistreat their animals, or over breed the females to death. Gov. John Kasich just a signed S.B. 331 into law, allowing pet stores, but more specifically Petland, to buy from puppy mills.

And just in case any of Ohio’s mayors have a beef against puppy mills, the law also bans towns and cities from prohibiting their pet stores to buy from puppy mills too.

The ASPCA attempted to lobby against the language crafted by Petland, but to no avail, meaning sometime soon, you’ll be able to see puppies in stores that might have come from a puppy mill with no guarantee that where it came from was a safe or humane environment.

What is a Puppy Mill you ask? Well — it is a large-scale commercial dog breeding facility where profit is given “priority over the well-being of the dogs,” according to the ASPCA website.

“Because puppy mills focus on profit, dogs are often bred with little regard for genetic quality. Puppy mill puppies are prone to congenital and hereditary conditions including heart disease and blood and respiratory disorders. In addition, puppy mill puppies often arrive in pet stores and in their new homes with diseases or infirmities ranging from parasites to pneumonia. Because puppies are removed from their littermates and mothers at a young age, they also often suffer from fear, anxiety and other behavioral problems.”
