Republican National Convention kicks off today
Cleveland is in for a doozy.
Today marks the beginning of the Republican National Convention, at a time when political tensions across the country are running at their highest in recent memory.
The convention takes place in Cleveland at Quicken Loans Arena and lasts until Thursday.
It comes in the wake of a deadly week, when several high-profile police killings, and killings of police officers, are still fresh in the minds of Americans.
Protestors are expected to show en masse, including some who will be carrying firearms under Ohio’s “open carry” laws.
The list of convention speakers includes presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and his family; Trump’s pick for Vice President, Indiana Governor Mike Pence; former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani; Congressional big-wigs Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell; several military veterans; and several former Republican presidential candidates including Ben Carson and Ted Cruz.
One notable absence from the lineup is Ohio Governor John Kasich, who will not be attending the GOP Convention despite the fact it’s taking place in his own state.
“It is odd, isn’t it?” Kasich told The Washington Post. “It’s going to be strange.”
