The Hopes and Dreams of the Silent Majority
The Hopes and Dreams of the Silent Majority
by Matthew Erman
Trump has won the presidency and not by a small margin — electorally he won with a healthy lead and while everyone’s facebook is blowing up with the fears and lamentations of those that did not support him: what are those that voted for him thinking now that they’ve put the most unlikely candidate in our lifetime into the White House.
I spoke with a few Trump supporters here in Ohio, about their expectations going forward and what they think a Trump Presidency means for everyone.
“I actually volunteered for the Democrats in getting people to vote and after hearing some of the things Hillary did I decided against her and thought more of the republican side with Trump as my interest. My only concern with him is that he is a businessman with not much political experience, but I think he is the much better choice as far as the 45th president goes.” An anonymous Columbus businesswoman said.
In speaking with another Trump supporter, a male from the suburbs of Kettering, things were less nuanced but still in line with what Trump presented as the fundamental difference between the two campaigns.
When did you know you were going to vote for Trump?
I have signs in my yard. My truck is covered in Trump stickers. I correct people that say dumb stuff on either side — like a war with Russia because Trump. I’m not sure why people think that. Hillary wants a no-fly-zone and Russia has said that will be a bad move.
I’m pro-God, pro-life and pro-gun. I think we need Russia as a friend. My favorite gun is an AK74 — which I have 4 but there are models I’ll never get — due to Obama putting a ban on weapon imports from Russia and China. So I’m hoping that will be lifted. Ultimately there isn’t one reason I voted for him. It’s everything he stands for.
And so going into the next four years — what are some things you’re excited about. You mentioned guns, but what does his Presidency mean for you?
I mean I realize guns are not as important to dems and libs but that was a huge part. I have enough guns to pay for my kids to go to college. They’re an investment. But other then that, Veterans. My wife is a bartender at a Veterans of Foreign Wars. I see these people every day. I see them with nothing compared to most and I see them not being able to afford the medical stuff they need. Or fighting with Veterans Affairs to get it.
My dad has worked 30 years at the same job but is waiting to retire.
I think the flag is more important than just any other flag. My kids go to a school where they say the pledge. I want it to stay that way. I want the wall. When you have so many attacks in our home land — saying no more people right now is a lot better than, ‘Ok let’s kill them all.’
As a Trump supporter there is a lot of stigma with that comes with that title — a lot of name calling — things like racist, sexist, etc. How do you as an individual respond to those claims and do you think Trump is going to be able to heal that divide between people in this country?
Well my dad’s side is 90% migrant or mixed leaning Black and Hungarian. I dated black girls all through school. So I don’t see myself as a racist — the media made that up.
I think people who use words like that are somewhat of a bully.
They use name calling to get their way, to scare and they’re talking to the wrong people. We fear God that’s it. And I have two beautiful daughters I’d want nothing more for them to grow up and do far more than most men or women dream of. It’s hard to believe something you know isn’t true. And most of it is coming from groups like Black Lives Matter and the Democrats. Those are the vary same groups holding their people back.
Any final thoughts?
It’s sad really. The Democrats had us almost convinced we were going to lose. So much so gun prices went up. I went to the doctor just in case I couldn’t afford both me and my kids next year. And some of us were already excepting it. But now that it flipped. You don’t see that from the same people who say all are equal and work together. The same people they call racists are left to build up this country. While they still bring it down. I hate Obama. But he’s my President and this is my country. No person will change a true patriots thoughts.
Inauguration is scheduled for Friday January, 20th 2017. The 45th President of the Unites States, Donald Trump, will be sworn in on the steps of the US Capitol at noon, when current President Barack Obama’s term expires.
Trump now takes on the title of President-Elect.
