Top US generals: Women should have to register for draft, too

The top US Army, Navy and Marine Corps generals testified before the US Senate yesterday, saying that women should also be included in the requirement to register for the draft at age 18.

Marine Corps general Robert Neller laid out plans for implementation of the new policy, which could take up to three years, but he also voiced deep concerns with allowing women into certain combat roles.

Neller said Marine Corps testing showed all-male units were able to march long distances carrying heavy loads and fire their weapons more accurately after marching long distances.

Lawmakers, including Arizona senator John McCain, criticized the decision to allow women to compete for combat jobs.

Though the generals said that standards would not be lowered for women, they also acknowledged inherent physical differences and differing injury rates between men and women that complicate integration.

For such a hot-button issue that is sure to spark conversations, don’t expect a concrete decision any time soon.
