Jan Verhoff has succeeded in doing something many young moms might think impossible: designing a home that is both kid-friendly and pleasing to the adult aesthetic.

The style I work to create is kid-friendly, comfortable, colorful, and crisp with a touch of bohemian textures,” she said. “My style is based around a feeling—of comfort, warmth, and being a cohesively styled space. There are plenty of areas for the kids to live and play along with incorporating pieces that have meaning, add life, and show our personality.”

The strategy to that style? Picking out one key item in each room and designing from the inside out, rather than go from big theme down to little details. Each key piece helps determine a color palette for each room, which change from one room to the next or continue into other areas as long as the colors align with the style.

Verhoff took (614) on a quick tour, breaking down a few key items that give each room their distinct style.

Kitchen

“Our kitchen was a complete remodel which gave me the opportunity to create our style with many key pieces. The light fixtures and white cabinets against the grey walls check the modern and crisp boxes while the butcher-block countertops add warmth to the space. The table and seating offers a comfortable and kid-friendly space for many people to gather and eat together. And, I added a touch of bohemian with the pillows.”

Living Room

“The palette for this space is cool—navy, blues, greens, and white—with touches of warm and metallic colors. The gallery wall is composed of family photos, kid-focused art, paintings, and decor pieces.  All these pieces align with our defined style. The coffee table has familial meaning, and the live edgewood is an unexpected pairing with the furniture in the room.”

Family Room

“Here, we stayed within the style of the home, but added some industrial elements—not exactly common for a room that also includes a play area. We love to look of the pipes, and the industrial floating shelves in the play area connect with the industrial mantel and entertainment stand, which creates a cohesive feeling throughout the whole room.”
