Buddy Dairy Redevelopment Awarded Historic Building Tax Credits

The Budd Dairy Co. building in Italian Village is being redeveloped — it’s an historic building and one of the more easily recognizable buildings in the area. The sign, the brick – it’s got that feeling that it just belongs. Or at least in this writer’s opinion.

We’ll see the building redeveloped similar to the old Wonder Bread facility, which was built out primarily as residential. There will be your classic Columbus style mixed-used buildings — business on the bottom, (residents) party on top.

The visually memorable Budd Dairy building is at 1086 North Fourth Street. If you’re traveling North you’ve likely driven by it hundreds or thousands of times. The building goes back all the way to the 1890s and once served as a milk processing and distribution facility.

The entire project was awarded $2 million in Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credits, which will help to offset the cost of the projected total cost of $25 million. This was the largest of the three central Ohio tax credits handed out by a healthy margin.

So what are these historic tax credits and what do they do? They are used to help “private developers in rehabilitating historic buildings in downtowns and neighborhoods,” according to The Dispatch.

“Giving a building new life honors the history of the building, while creating construction jobs in the short term and opportunity for economic activity into the future,” said David Goodman, director of the Ohio Development Services Agency, in a statement.
