Churches harness football rivalry to gather bottled water for Flint, Michigan
In response to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, the City Campus Church in the University District entered into a friendly competition with Thrive Church of Mount Pleasant, Michigan.
The goal: see who can donate more bottled water to Flint. The catch: whoever donates fewer bottles of water has to preach in a football jersey of their arch-rival.
That means that Rev. Ben Thompson of City Campus Church might be seen on the pulpit in what he called “the colors of sin: maize and blue,” or alternatively, Rev. Jason Raitz of Thrive Church will be wearing scarlet and gray.
As of right now, the wager is almost at a tie, with Thrive Church having donated 10,000 bottles and City Campus Church, 6,000, with another 6,000 on the way.
Bottled water is a much-needed commodity in Flint, where unsafe levels of lead and other metals severely contaminated the city’s tap water.
To donate bottled water, visit Graham Expeditionary Middle School, 140 E. 16th Ave., between 10 a.m. and noon on Sunday, or email [email protected] for more information.
