On Monday’s City Council meeting, the city of Columbus has passed an ordinance to go forward with Watch Guard, a body camera vendor from Allen, Texas.

The website says the Vista line cameras which are presumed to be the model is a, “Ultra-rugged body-worn camera with simple controls, allowing officers to capture the highest quality video evidence.”

The roll out for the cameras will begin in the coming weeks, with 70 officers in the CPD traffic unit being outfitted first. As they become acclimated, up to 1,400 will be added into the program by the middle of 2017.

The body cameras will cost the city $9 million over five years, but it’s for greater transparency and accountability for Columbus’s Police Divisions and the community as a whole said City Council President Zach Klein.
