Construction on rapid transit Cmax bus line to begin next month

Before Columbus was deemed a Smart City, city officials signed off on Cmax: a rapid-transit bus line running primarily along Cleveland Avenue from High Street in south downtown to OhioHealth’s Westerville Medical Campus.

And according to COTA, construction on the new line is set to begin next month.

Expect to see lighted pylons popping up along the route that will display real-time arrival times for the new busses, set to start running in early 2018.

In order to ensure the line’s “rapid transit,” busses will make limited stops and will have signal priority, meaning traffic lights will change as busses approach to keep them on schedule.

The construction will cause a few traffic disruptions throughout the next year, which will be documented on an interactive map on COTA.com.

COTA has four public meetings on the new line scheduled this week: 6 p.m. today at 350 N. Cleveland Ave., Westerville; 6 p.m. Tuesday at 33 N. High St. Downtown; 6 p.m. Wednesday at 1721 Northland Park Ave. on the Northeast Side; and 5:30 p.m. Thursday at 1410 Cleveland Ave. on the Northeast Side.
