Firefighters suspended for ‘kegs and eggs’ party at old firehouse

When Columbus firefighters threw a party last summer for a 40-year veteran who was struggling with retirement from the force, their intentions were simply to help their old friend.

However, the seemingly innocent act resulted in suspensions for two lieutenants and a captain, and another incident in the coming year could result in demotions.

Capt. Lawrence Francisco and Lt. John Torrie were suspended for 48 hours for consuming alcohol at the party, while Lt. Ray Wine was suspended for 72 hours for providing alcohol.

Letters of reprimand were issued to 18 other firefighters who attended the party.

Dave Montgomery, president of International Association of Fire Fighters Local 67, condemned the punishments because the firefighters were not on duty during the party. However, Fire Chief Kevin O’Connor justified the punishments because alcohol was consumed on city property.

The old fire station was shut down at the time of the party, and has since been demolished to make way for a new facility.
