Judge: Ohio State didn’t defame Jon Waters
A state court dismissed a lawsuit issued by ousted Ohio State Marching Band Director Jon Waters claiming the university defamed his character.
Waters was fired after a report commissioned by the university alleged the marching band had a “sexualized culture” that he tolerated and encouraged.
The Court of Claims rejected Waters’ claims that the school’s statements were slanderous and defamatory and invaded his privacy.
However, some band members disagreed with the court’s decision.
“As someone who was in the band during this terrible time, I can undoubtedly say that The Ohio State University did everything they could to discredit and shut down Jon Waters all while attempting to silence the band members and the alumni,” marching band alumnus Connor Notestine wrote on Facebook.
“So sad to see. Jonathan Waters is the best and most deserving director this band could’ve ever had. Ever.”
Waters recently found employment at Heidelberg University as its director of bands.
