New Albany police chief: kids under 16 unsafe outside
Whatever happened to going outside and finding something to do?
You probably remember the image of an upset parent shooing you out the door after sitting inside for too long. Is such a simple life a thing of the past?
According to New Albany Police Chief Greg Jones, 16 is the appropriate age to let children play outside by themselves.
“I think that’s the threshold where you see children getting a little bit more freedom,” Jones said.
Jones made the comments in the context of New Albany’s Safety Town program. One of the goals of the program is to educate children about “stranger danger.”
Though only about 1% of abductions are committed by non-family members, a child’s reaction to an instance of stranger danger is still a concern for parents.
Is such a sentiment an overreaction, or have times truly changed? Tell us what you think in the comments or on Twitter @614NOW!
