Ohio CVS stores to start selling heroin antidote next month
In an editorial by President Barack Obama published in the Dispatch this morning, he called for the nation to step up and end the opioid epidemic we are facing, stressing the importance of effective treatment and education about the epidemic.
It turns out that Ohio is making strides in the direction of treatment by allowing naloxone (also known as Narcan) to be sold at CVS pharmacies without a prescription.
Over 15,000 doses of naloxone were administered by emergency medical service personnel in 2014, and sales of the drug often go to family members of opioid abusers, who afraid that their loved ones might overdose.
The nation’s opioid epidemic has been spurred by a number of factors, including a casual attitude towards prescribing addictive prescription pain meds and the extremely addictive nature of strong opioids like heroin.
