Ohio Dept. of Health confirms first case of Zika in Ohio

A 30-year-old Cuyahoga County woman who recently returned from Haiti was diagnosed with Zika, the Ohio Department of Health confirmed today.

The virus is transmitted through mosquito bites, and causes fever-like symptoms, exhaustion, and birth defects for pregnant women. It cannot be transmitted through casual contact, but at least one case of sexually-transmitted Zika in the U.S. has been confirmed.

The World Health Organization has urged pregnant women not to travel to affected areas, and told travelers to take measures to prevent mosquito bites.

Though the virus is generally mild and does not normally require hospitalization, there is currently no treatment or vaccine.

No mosquito-transmitted cases of Zika have originated in the U.S. so far.
