State park linked to infectious disease outbreak
At first it was a mystery disease, but now Pickaway County Health officials have pinned down a culprit and where it might be coming from.
An outbreak of Shigellosis has hit Mount Sterling, just southwest of Columbus, an infectious disease caused by the bacteria shigella. It can easily contracted when people fail to wash their hands properly, or when infected food or beverages are consumed.
Sick people are reporting nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, usually about a day or two after exposure.
According to health officials, the origin of the outbreak could be Deer Creek State Park, where several people sickened by the disease say they visited between July 15-17.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms and you’ve recently visited Deer Creek State Park, you are encouraged to call your local health district to report it.
