Columbus native garners international attention for women’s activism

When Columbus native Libby Bruce had one of her posts go viral on Facebook, she had no idea of the impact it would eventually have.

After making the post, Bruce was contacted by Kenyan activist Diana Okello, who was collecting pads for girls to use in school.

“Pads in Kenya are quite a bit expensive,” Okello said. “If a pad is almost the price of a dollar and you live below the dollar, you would never prioritize a sanitary towel before food.”

Springing to action, Bruce partnered with local businesses Yellow Brick Pizza, Seventh Son Brewing, and Kafe Kerouac to be drop-off locations where people could donate pads to the cause.

Once the pads started making trips to Kenya, it caught the attention of the BBC, who profiled Bruce and Okello in a short video linked below.

It just goes to show that sometimes all it takes to make a huge difference is the initial push to get the ball rolling.

Okello is now educating girls around Kenya on women’s hygiene and Bruce is still accepting women’s hygiene supplies at the businesses noted as drop-off locations.
