Local bar and music venue Ace of Cups cancelled an upcoming performance by all-female Dayton band Good English after their drummer, Leslie Rasmussen, wrote a letter exalting the character of convicted rapist and former Stanford swim-team member Brock Allen Turner.
He was sentenced to six months in jail, which is being called a “shockingly light” prison term by media outlets and women’s rights activists.
In her letter, Rasmussen, who is a lifelong friend of Turner, writes, “Brock is not a monster. He is the furthest thing from anything like that, and I have known him much longer than the people involved in this case.
“I am so sick of hearing these young men are monsters when really, you are throwing these barely 20-somethings into camp-like university environments, supporting partying, and then your mind is blown when things get out of hand.”
Rasmussen has since been condemned as a rape-apologist by media outlets and activists, and music festivals and venues across the country have dropped Good English for Rasmussen’s statements.
