FBI: Artan Inspired by ISIS but had No Contact
In a new press release, the FBI has announced new findings on the OSU Student and Somali born attacker that injured 11 people on Monday with a car and a butcher knife. They are not saying whether the act will be classified as terrorism as it is too soon for them to make that call.
They also went into a visit Artan had taken to Walmart that morning to purchase a knife, but no word on whether that was the knife he used during the attack.
We’ve supplied the legal definition of terrorism according to the FBI for those that do not understand why the FBI is not labeling this a “terrorist” attack:
“Domestic terrorism” means activities with the following three characteristics:
- Involve acts dangerous to human life that violate federal or state law;
- Appear intended (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination. or kidnapping; and
- Occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the U.S.
18 U.S.C. § 2332b defines the term “federal crime of terrorism” as an offense that:
- Is calculated to influence or affect the conduct of government by intimidation or coercion, or to retaliate against government conduct; and
- Is a violation of one of several listed statutes, including § 930(c) (relating to killing or attempted killing during an attack on a federal facility with a dangerous weapon); and § 1114 (relating to killing or attempted killing of officers and employees of the U.S.).

ISIS Claims Attack at OSU
ISIS’s news agency, Amaq, have claimed yesterday’s attack on OSU campus which left 11 injured and the assailant dead. They have labeled Abdul Razak Ali Artan, the 18-year old OSU student as a “soldier of the Islamic State,” according to The Hill.
Authorities have not yet released details on the motivation behind the attack, but have not ruled out terrorism.
Officer Alan Horujko is a Legit Hero
Chalk it up to right time, right place but OSU police officer Alan Horujko, who was by Watts Hall because of a gas leak, single-handedly stopped the OSU assailant from injuring and maiming more people. This guy is a hero and 100% deserves praise and accolades for acting quickly and with purpose.
Officer Horujko is a Cinci native who joined the OSU Police Department in January of 2015. He graduated from Ohio State University in ’12 with a bachelor’s degree in security and intelligence. During his time as a student, he apparently served as a Student Safety Service officer between 2010 and 2012.
As a twisted turn of events, Horujko even appeared in Ohio State’s educational video on how to deal with an “active shooter” situation.
Nearly all of the principles and tactics that were addressed in the above video were used yesterday during the attack.
11 people were injured by a knife-wielding assailant, Abdul Razak Ali Artan, and Officer Alan Horujko stopped the attack minutes after it began outside Watts Hall.
Details Released on OSU Assailant
According to initial reports coming out from various media outlets some sparse details have been released on the OSU assailant. Law enforcement officials have reported that the assailant was an 18-year-old Ohio State student,.
We now know the full story behind the confirmed attacker, Abdul Razak Ali Artan, a frustrated Muslim-American born in Somalia and living in the U.S. as a legal resident.
Back in August, The Lantern published an interview with the same student, a third-year logistics management student who had just transferred from Columbus State from where he had just graduated.

Despite being initially reported as an active shooter situation, the suspect did not have a gun and did not shoot anyone. Initial reports claimed that there were upwards of two or three involved in the assault, but after the situation was found to be over it was confirmed that Artan acted alone.
ABC news reports that Artan posted on his Facebook page, “If you want us Muslims to stop carrying lone wolf attacks, then make peace,” the post reads. “We will not let you sleep unless you give peace to the Muslims.”
His final facebook post, “Forgive and forget. Love.” — was at the time cryptic but now in hindsight seems to be a plea for forgiveness for the acts soon-to-be committed.
OSU President Drake Gives Press Conference — Local and National Leaders Express Sympathy
After a press conference with OSU President Drake, it has been confirmed that the assailant is officially D.O.A. The assailant and incident is confirmed not to be a shooting but a stabbing. After the assailant hit a curb and purposefully hit several students and faculty with his car, he exited his vehicle and began stabbing and slashing with a butcher knife.
Minutes later, police arrived on the scene and moments after that the assailant was shot and killed. He is the only confirmed suspect and CPD have reiterated that they believe this to be a one suspect incident and that suspect is dead.
Mayor Andrew J. Ginther has released the following statement regarding the shooting at the Ohio State University this morning:
“As the situation at the Ohio State University unfolds, we lift up the victims and the first responders in our thoughts and prayers. We ask for students and university employees to continue to follow instructions of Ohio State authorities.”

Run. Hide. Fight. — “Active Shooter” on OSU Campus
“Run Hide Fight.” These were instructions given to Ohio State students via Buckeye Alerts this morning when an active shooter was at large on campus.
“Run Hide Fight” is a term coined by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. They advise individuals in the vicinity of an “Active Shooter” to first run to a secure place. Then, hide in an area that is out of view to the shooter and finally, as a last result, fight. The DHS suggests that victims should throw items to incapacitate the shooter.
Though the protocol for responding to an active shooter is brief, the DHS believe it is the best defense.
