Highball 2016 — Spooky but Ultimately Disappointing

by Christina Best

Friday night’s Highball Halloween celebration felt like more filler than fun to this first-timer. I don’t know if it was because it had been a dreary day or if it was because it was such a cold, windy evening — but the event wasn’t as energized and busy as I expected. Perhaps, there’s something to say about expectations and all that — I mean, that’s more on me than anything else.

With that being said, I still had a great time, and I appreciate all the planning and hard work that goes into putting on such a well-regarded event — and that’s what this is, a well-regarded event in Columbus.

David Bowie was the inspiration for the evening’s festivities. Attendees were encouraged to pay homage to the late pop star by wearing costumes inspired by his iconic looks. Dressed in a panda onesie, I was certain I’d look out of place in a sea of red wigs and lightning-bolt face paint. Much to my surprise, there were a great variety of costumes.

From people in their street clothes to those wearing elaborate masks and headpieces—all costume ideas were accounted for. I saw Michonne (The Walking Dead) holding hands with Jon Snow (Game of Thrones). There was a lucky Carl Sanders flanked by a few tutu-wearing chicks. And, thankfully, I saw very few Donald Trumps. I also danced to Bowie’s “Heroes” with a Day of the Dead-inspired, larger than life skeleton.

I rounded out my evening with karaoke. After listening to two young women giggle their way through “Baby Got Back,” I performed “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve. (Has anyone yet figured out what a “verve” is, by the way?) I was soon joined by a bed-sheet-wearing fellow who went by “Jesus.” I sang for an intimate crowd of about five people. Baby steps.

I spent a little over $20 for the evening, which I think was money well-spent considering some of the proceeds raised by Highball go toward initiatives that support both the art and infrastructure along the Short North. As a city newbie and Short North lover, I’m excited about all the development happening in this neighborhood.

If I get the chance to attend next year, I will definitely go on Saturday so I can see the fashion show. Overall, I enjoyed the people watching at Highball. I just wish there had been more non-music related activities for people to participate in.
