The funeral for Officer Sean R. Johnson will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. this morning.

It will be followed by a procession to Resurrection Cemetery in Lewis Center.

As a 16-year veteran of the force, Officer Johnson was killed in a highway motorcycle accident on May 19.

He is the first Hilliard police officer to die on duty since the department was founded in 1960.

5/24/16: Heroes escort announced for fallen Hilliard officer

Hilliard police officer Sean R. Johnson, who died in a highway motorcycle crash, will be given a Heroes Escort by fellow police officers through the streets of Hilliard today starting at about 1 p.m.

The procession will start at Schoedinger Funeral Home, 229 E. State Street and travel through Hilliard past First Responders Park and the Hilliard Division of Police Headquarters, where community members are encouraged to line the streets to honor Officer Johnson.

The Heroes Escort will end at St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, where visitation and viewing hours begin at 4 p.m.

Ohio Governor John Kasich issued a statement saying flags will be flown at half-mast tomorrow in mourning of Officer Johnson.

5/19/16: Hilliard police officer killed in highway motorcycle crash

An on-duty Hilliard police officer was killed in a motorcycle crash at about 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon, authorities confirmed.

16-year force veteran Officer Sean R. Johnson was taking part in a training exercise when the accident occurred on the ramp from I-270 to SR 161.

The accident marks the first time an officer of the Hilliard Police Department has died in the line of duty since its inception in 1960

In a Facebook post, Hilliard P.D. described Officer Johnson as “an exemplary officer and well respected by his peers.”

He is survived by his two children, ages 14 and 11, his mother, and his family.
