John Oliver Goes After Gov. John Kasich & Ohio in Charter School Segment

During an 18 minute segment, John Oliver of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, took the nation’s 6,700 charter schools to task, specifically Ohio as one of the worst in the country.

Charter schools are publicly funded and privately run. These schools have been notoriously bipartisan in support, from Bernie Sanders to Mitt Romney supporting the idea of charter schools.

Which is where John Oliver’s video begins to dig into the actual operating numbers of the schools and at 9:22 he begins to rip into Ohio, after going after Pennsylvania.

“Ohio’s charter laws were for decades so lax that even charter advocates have called it the Wild West,” stated Oliver, before continuing, “The state has around 360 charter and their Governor, John Kasich, speaks often about how much he loves choice and competition in schools.”

John Oliver then shoots to a video of Governor Kasich giving a basic explanation of how capitalism works, albeit with a somewhat silly metaphor.

Oliver then deconstructs and lambasts Kasich to a jeering audience.

“It’s a little hard to hear the man who just defunded Planned Parenthood talk about the importance of choice.” Oliver said.

The entire segment can be found below, which offers insight into Ohio’s charter schools, the nation as a whole and how we’re technically not the worst state when it comes to performance.
