Massive airbag recall expanded even further

Airbag manufacturer Takata is having a rough week.

After an airbag recall began last month, up to seventeen automakers have issued recalls for the defective airbags–over 35 million vehicles in total.

The automakers include, but are not limited to Acura, BMW, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Infiniti, Lexus, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota and Subaru.

Takata airbags can sometimes eject shrapnel into drivers and passengers when they inflate after being exposed to humidity and repeated hot-cold cycles.

The manufacturers say the airbags will be replaced for free.
