Ohio Dumps Trump

Nearly every major member of the Ohio Republican Party has officially distanced itself from Presidential Candidate Donald Trump, including Sen. Rob Portman and Gov. John Kasich. Since the release of two videos where Trump disparages women and claims to have sexually assaulted them in the past, more have moved to make comments to show they no longer support Trump.

Despite the near catastrophic events of this weekend including a contentious debate where Trump was asked if he understood that he bragged about sexual assaulting women, Trump has not seen a dramatic shift in the polls and has vowed to stay in the race.

Last night, after the debate there were rumors circulating that his running mate Mike Pence had removed himself from the ticket but that claim has since been unsubstantiated after a tweet of his.

Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio: “While I continue to respect those who still support Donald Trump, I can no longer support him. I continue to believe our country cannot afford a Hillary Clinton presidency. I will be voting for Mike Pence for President.”

Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Republican: “It’s clear that he hasn’t changed and has no interest in doing so. As a result, Donald Trump is a man I cannot and should not support. The actions of the last day are disgusting, but that’s not why I reached this decision, it has been an accumulation of his words and actions that many have been warning about. I will not vote for a nominee who has behaved in a manner that reflects so poorly on our country. Our country deserves better.”

State Auditor Dave Yost, Republican:  “I condemn his loathsome words and despicable attitude. Much, much worse is the conduct he laughingly describes, which amounts to sexual assault.

“Mr. Trump must do the only thing remaining in his power to defeat Hillary Clinton: withdraw from the race. In doing so, he will at least keep faith with his supporters who have supported him precisely because they thought he would best fight against her destructive policies.”

Former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, running for U.S. Senate: “Everyone in America is disgusted and fed up with Donald Trump — except Senator Portman. Senator Portman’s continued support for Trump is equal parts pathetic and offensive, but that’s what Ohioans have come to expect from a lapdog like Portman. If Portman won’t stand up to Trump, there’s no way Ohioans can trust him to stand up for us in the Senate.”

Attorney General Mike DeWine: “Donald Trump’s comments are wrong, repulsive, and unacceptable. No one should ever talk about anyone that way. His comments fall short of the standard we should expect of our public officials, and while it is appropriate that he has apologized, he must demonstrate the sincerity of his apology through his actions moving forward.”

Columbus Dispatch: In an editorial article, the Columbus Dispatch is for the first time in 100 years endorsing a democratic candidate. In their endorsement they said, “The stakes are too high to sit out this election and risk letting Trump misuse the awesome power of the presidency. The Dispatch urges voters to elect Hillary Clinton.”
