OSU President Drake Opposes Guns on Campus

In an interview with Ann Fisher on All Sides with Ann Fisher, Ohio State University President Michael Drake has said he opposes legislation that would allow guns on campus.

“None of my colleagues or myself think that’s a good idea,” He further elaborated that only trained professionals like OSU Police or CPD should carry weapons, not students or campus visitors.

Drake said his decisive handling of the situation shows that only professionals should carry guns to deal with such circumstances and clarified that he felt the fast response of OSU Police during the attack further proved to him that students should not have guns on campus.

A meeting between Ohio legislators was scheduled ahead of the attack and was to consider a bill allowing people with concealed-carry licenses to have guns onto campuses. Regardless of passing at a state or federal level, the University officials would still have the right to disallow guns on campus.

According to media outlets and press releases from officials, there was only a 1 minute and 45 second delay from the beginning of the attack for the Buckeye Alert message to be sent.

“That was a dramatic improvement over what it would have been even a year ago.” Drake Said.
