Public health officials urge early protection against mosquitos

Though we had a few days of beautiful weather without the bugs, there’s no doubt about it, mosquito and tick season is approaching!

With that in mind, public health officials say that taking preventative measures to protect yourself against the pests is the best way to avoid getting bit, and to avoid the diseases they carry.

Mosquitos can carry the West Nile Virus and the Zika virus, which is especially dangerous for pregnant women, while ticks can carry Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

The best way to protect yourself is a no-brainer: use bug spray liberally from May through October.

And when you’re in mosquito hot-spots, you might consider breaking out a light-colored long-sleeved shirt and some long pants, or at least some high socks.

Fortunately public health officials say it isn’t super likely Zika will make it’s way to Ohio via mosquitos, but they also say it’s best not to take any chances.
