Should School Start After Labor Day?

Labor Day is the awesome break at the beginning of September for workers and students alike — it is a small four day week reprieve from either: working all summer, the stress of being a returning student.

What would happen if Ohio decided that school should start after Labor Day?

According to Ohio Senator Gayle Manning of Huron and Lorain counties, that’s exactly what Ohio needs to do — A former elementary school teacher, Gayle Manning feels that pushing class starting times to past Labor Day would ensure students and teachers aren’t melting in the sweltering heat of the late August sun.

“Our kids are in classes, it’s 90-degrees, 95-degrees in there, and they’re not learning anything anyway because of the heat,” Manning told WJW-TV in Cleveland.

This is certainly an issue in Columbus, as currently there are 51 schools without central AC.

“We are sweaty and we are in the heat but everybody has been highly resilient,” Columbus Gifted Academy principal Amanda Reidenbaugh told NBC4. “I’ve heard no complaints from our students.”

With this proposed bill, it will allow districts to opt out if they decide a late start isn’t best for them. Currently the largest issue is that by pushing back the start of schools, the first semester would not finish by Christmas Break.
