Huntington Park is strong, independent field: doesn’t use tax dollars to pay off debt

Take us out to the ballgame where the stadium is strong and independent. Unlike most publicly owned sports venues, the Clipper’s Huntington Park has paid off nearly half of its $42.5 million debt without tax dollars. Yippee!

Even though Franklin County hasn’t thrust the debt of Huntington Park upon us taxpayers, we have still provided a significant amount of money to the stadium. Ten years ago, the state of Ohio rounded up $7 million to be granted to Huntington Park and Franklin County also put forth $15 million to buy the land where the park sits.

We think Columbus deserves more dime-a-dog nights, what about you?

The remaining $22.7 million in debt is scheduled to be paid off by 2032.

Franklin County owns both the baseball franchise as well as the stadium which is pretty rare. They do all this through two nonprofits.

Next year will be the 10th season at Huntington Park and it’s going to be a big one. A new field, costing $600,000 to $700,000, is slated to be laid in preparation for the 2018 AAA All-Star Game and AAA championship game. Cha-ching.
