Gateway Film Center Lands Rare 70mm Version of Kong: Skull Island

Starting Sunday, March 19, Gateway Film Center will be one of only 10 theaters worldwide to present Kong: Skull Island on 70mm film. 

With a history that reaches back to the heart of cinema, and a lush visual style straight out of the 1970s (inspired by Apocalypse Now), Kong: Skull Island is a perfect match for the richer presentation, deeper colors and throwback appeal of 70mm film.

“The team and I are big believers in both film as an essential format, and in hunting down and bringing to Gateway Film Center fans surprising movie experiences they can’t find anywhere else,” said Gateway Film Center President and Programmer Chris Hamel. “Seeing this new Kong on 70mm is like seeing him for the first time.”

Kong: Skull Island will be presented for select screenings on 70mm. Other screenings will be digital projection.

Made by the producers of Godzilla, the newest in the King Kong franchise reimagines the origin story of one of the most enduring, iconic monsters of all time. 

The nonprofit, independent film center added 70mm to its presentation capabilities in 2016 for the opening of Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. The format has gained a renewed following in recent years, thanks in large part to the efforts of Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, and Paul Thomas Anderson. However, blockbusters have gone analog as well, with Disney also giving Star Wars: The Force Awakens a 70mm run last year.

In addition to its 70mm and 35mm (added in 2015) presentations, the film center will also add 4K projection this month ahead of the March 30 North American premiere of a newly restored print of the cult classic Donnie Darko.
