Come all yee squires, jokers for Renaissance Fest

Games of Thrones is over and we’re all mourning the loss (47 weeks and 4 days until season 7) but you can get a taste of a real-life version very soon.

It’s the Renaissance Festival, yee ol’ feather heads!

This isn’t fadoodle lads, the festival kicks off this weekend and takes place every weekend after until October 29.

There will be jousting matches, sword fights, jugglers, leather making and stone carving, human-powered rides, and of course massive turkey legs.

Though the Renaissance Festival is dedicated entirely to reliving the bygone eras, one main component of reenactment will be missing; Live Action Role Playing.

And the reason?

“Insurance,” said Jake Bova, seven year member of the Columbus chapter of the Dagorhir Battle Games Association, Realm of Rivendell. “We do full contact fighting and simply speaking, the festival doesn’t have any experience in that field, or at least not enough to justify the insurance premiums to let us fight there.”

Another reason the two don’t coexist is because there isn’t an explicit relationship between the two.

“Sure people can go there to get accessories and garb, and while many people who work at the Renaissance Festival LARP as well, there is no official association or ties between certain LARP groups and the festival itself,” said Bova.

Bova has been patronizing the festival for about five years now, always proudly wearing his handmade armor and gear.

One day, de’d like to see the fest and LARP join forces.

“I think the festival grounds are missing out on an excellent business opportunity to expand,” he said.
