Federal gov’t loves liquor, gives distilleries tax breaks
Columbus has been made popular by local breweries but with a new tax cut, distilleries may be able to join their ranks.
A call has been made to cut the Federal Excise Tax from $13.50 per proof gallon down to $2.70 per proof gallon. This will be a tremendous relief to local brewers looking to grow their profits and operations. For example, this alleviation will allow Watershed Distillery to add at least five more jobs, reports Columbus Business First.
The proposed tax cut would apply to distilleries that make less than 100,000 proof gallons a year and would only apply to the 2018 and 2019 years.
The new cut would apply to 30 of the local distilleries in central Ohio including Watershed, Middle West Spirits, 451 Spirits, and Mill St. Distillery.
