Old Short North UDF to be next great taco hub
The Short North is getting a lil Mexican kick from down south. Jackson Mississippi-based Babalu Tapas & Tacos will be samba’ing into 900 N High St. where the old UDF used to be as part of the Elford Development project. This taco joint will open next year. The restaurant is named after a song Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz) sang on I Love Lucy.
Like their name suggests, Babalu does tacos and tapas + more. On the tapas menu, hangry people can find crab cakes, chicken satay, shrimp and grits, and more fishy options. For those with a more local pallet, Babalu offers chicken wings, a burger, and roasted potatoes with a special teriyaki sauce. The exec chef will run a scratch kitchen; fresh-squeezed juices for margs, handmade tortillas daily, and many ingredients will be sourced locally.
Their brand has six stores scattered over the country but each store is a bit different.
