Council decides: $185k towards legal defense for immigrants

Tonight, Columbus City Council will vote on whether or not $185,000 of city money can be allocated towards helping immigrants who are facing deportation.

If passed, three organizations would receive money that would be spent on educating detained immigrants on their rights and legal representation of detained immigrants who are in danger of deportation in the Cleveland Immigration Court, reports the Dispatch.

Councilwoman Elizabeth Brown has been working tirelessly to establish these funds since President Trump placed a travel ban on seven Muslim-majority countries, says the Dispatch.

The three organization to receive money would be:

  • Advocates for Basic Legal Equality Inc
  • The Council on American-Islamic Relations
  • Our Lady of Guadalupe Center of Catholic Social Services
