Update — Columbus Bucks at Trump’s Executive Order

Update — Columbus Bucks at Trump’s Executive Order

Update:

Monday, January 30 at 3:30 p.m, Mayor Andrew J. Ginther and Columbus City Council President Zach Klein will address the recent Trump administration executive order regarding immigration, how it affects Columbus and the city’s response to it.

The press conference will take place at the Columbus City Hall Mayor’s Conference Room, 2nd Floor.

45th President of the U.S., Donald Trump has only recently claimed office but has already signed sweeping executive orders; one for his US-Mexico border wall and the other that changes how federal agencies deal with illegal immigrants as well as indefinitely block Syrian refugees from the U.S. while imposing a 120-day ban on all other refugees.

Trump has also listed priority removals as those who have “engaged in fraud or willful misrepresentation in connection with any official matter or application before a governmental agency,” which essentially includes any undocumented worker who has been hired and signed an employment agreement. The order also changes privacy policies for federal agencies that will allow the sharing of undocumented immigrant’s personal identifying information in an effort to apprehend them.

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther and his administration has seen these executive orders related to the immigration, deportation and the border wall and have released an official statement:

“Columbus is an open, inclusive and welcoming city. These are the values I bring to the office every day and the lens through which I evaluate all of my initiatives and policies. Assuring the public safety of all our residents is my top priority, and strengthening police-community relations is a critical part of accomplishing this.  Our Division of Police works hard to build and preserve trust with the communities it serves, including immigrant communities. Misguided immigration policies will not immunize us from terrorism or crime. We remain committed to promoting a spirit of inclusion because that is what makes Columbus America’s Opportunity City.”
