Columbus Congresswoman makes point to attend Trump Inauguration

On the eve of one of the most anticipated presidential inaugurations in recent memory, nearly 60 representatives have made a point to skip Friday’s swearing-in of President-Elect Donald Trump.

His time as President-Elect has mirrored his run-up to the nomination, which was often mired with controversy, the most recent case being a twitter attack on civil rights icon and Congressman John Lewis after he called Trump’s presidency illegitimate.

Columbus Democratic Congresswoman Joyce Beatty is making a point to attend the inauguration.

“I think you need people on both sides,” she said according to FOX28. Beatty, recalls that her decision wasn’t easy but a constituent helped convince it would be the right thing to do.

“I had an elderly constituent say to me, ‘I fought too hard to see a black man get elected to office and now I’m concerned’, we have a president she didn’t believe is qualified, but she said ‘You’re my congresswoman and I think you have a duty to be there. And when you’re there, hopefully you’ll be able to look at him eye to eye, stand shoulder to shoulder, toe to toe and fight for women, fight for minorities, fight for all human kind.’ So, I’m going in that spirit, ” Beatty said to Fox28.
