Ohio Secretary of State Discovers Illegal Voting

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted has discovered through an investigation that hundreds of non-citizens registered and dozens voted illegally.

Via a press release from Husted’s office, 385 non-citizens registered to vote in Ohio while only 82 actually voted in at least one election.

Since taking office in 2011, Secretary Husted has identified 821 non-U.S. Citizens on the state’s voter rolls including 291 in 2013, 145 in 2015 and 385 today. 126 non-U.S. Citizens who have cast at least one ballot in an Ohio election including 17 in 2013, 27 in 2015 and 82 today.

Since taking office in 2011, Secretary Husted has removed over 541,000 deceased Ohioans from the voter rolls and resolved 1.6 million duplicate registrations.

“In light of the national discussion about illegal voting it is important to inform our discussions with facts. The fact is voter fraud happens, it is rare and when it happens, we hold people accountable,” Secretary Husted said.

To fix the situation – the 303 registered voters that are non-citizens will be sent a letter that essentially says they need to cancel their registration — a follow-up letter will be sent if 30 days pass without action and then law enforcement will get involved if no action after that.

“I have a responsibility to preserve the integrity of Ohio’s elections system,” Secretary Husted said. “When you consider that in Ohio we have had 112 elections decided by one vote or tied in the last three years, every case of illegal voting must be taken seriously and elections officials must have every resource available to them to respond accordingly.”
