OSU student gov pondering adoption of Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Will Ohio State do away with Columbus Day and opt for Indigenous Peoples’ day?

That will be the question discussed at tonight’s Ohio State’s Undergrad Student Government meeting.

The Lantern reports that the proponents say the change is necessary to empathize more with Native American students. They don’t call for any additional action to be taken on the day, just the name change.

However opponents feel Columbus Day is more appropriate as none of us would be here if it weren’t for European explores like Christopher himself.

If the general assembly passes the resolution, the motion will move on to administrators who will have the final say. If it’s passed by administrators, Ohio State would be the first school in the Big Ten to recognize Indigenous People’s Day.
