Sen. Sherrod Brown Will Not Support Trump’s SCOTUS Pick
Reactions to Tuesday’s decision on Neil Gorsuch replacing Justice Scalia on the Supreme Court were not surprising – they pretty much followed party lines.
While Republicans Senate Majority Leader McConnell, Dr. Rand Paul, and Rob Portman all traditionally supported the decision, with Portman releasing a statement:
“I welcome the nomination of Judge Gorsuch to serve as the next Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. The job of a Supreme Court justice is to fairly and impartially apply the law, and to protect the rights guaranteed by the Constitution, not to advance public policy goals by legislating from the bench.”
Democrat Sen. Sherrod Brown told Fox28 that he could not support the decision on the basis that Gorsuch had a lack of understanding for working families and distinguishing between corporations and people.
He referred to the Hobby Lobby case where he ruled that corporations could deny health care coverage for birth control pills because of a corporation’s religious beliefs.
In an op-ed by New York Times columnist Neal K. Katyal he argues that liberals should support the Gorsuch pick.
“I believe this, even though we come from different sides of the political spectrum. I was an acting solicitor general for President Barack Obama; Judge Gorsuch has strong conservative bona fides and was appointed to the 10th Circuit by President George W. Bush. But I have seen him up close and in action, both in court and on the Federal Appellate Rules Committee (where both of us serve); he brings a sense of fairness and decency to the job, and a temperament that suits the nation’s highest court.”
