Should off-duty cops be able to pack heat in gun-free zones?
A couple of Republican lawmakers think off-duty cops should be able to pack heat everywhere–even in designated no firearms areas. Their logic is that gun-free zones attract individuals wanting to carry out attacks. If police officers, the individuals trained for crisis situations, were able to carry their weapons in these areas, they could be the difference between life and death in an attack, reports WOSU.
Those pushing back feel private property owners’ wishes of keeping their space gun-free should be respected.
This isn’t the first time similar legislation has been introduced. Other lawmakers have wanted exceptions to be made for no-gun areas but they’ve been shot down.
This most recent bill had it’s first hearing recently and WOSU says there’s no word on if it will push forward.
