The Central Ohio Transit Authority reports that city bus violence is on the rise.
COTA reports a 65% increase in violence from 2015 to 2016. According to NBC4i, that percentage equates to an increase from 32 assaults on city buses in 2015, to 53 assaults in 2016.
COTA prefaces that although the increase is significant, the company provides 19 million trips a year, so the number of assaults is still small compared to the number of bus trips in a year.
COTA has provided all of their buses with audio and video surveillance, and has trained all of their bus drivers in de-escalation techniques. Additionally, all drivers are in constant communication with emergency radio operators.
